Emily Hughes Named Academy Coach of the Year
On May 12, 2014, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual Academy Awards. Teachers, principals, business partners, and community interest groups came together to celebrate the achievements of the 2013-2014 school year and recognize those schools that have made outstanding gains. Emily Hughes has enjoyed the honor and privilege of leading all three of the career academies at Hillwood High School to model accreditation through the National Career Academy Coalition. As Hillwood's first academy coach, Hughes has a history of leadership and involvement with the transformation in MNPS high schools through the system-wide implementation of the academy model. With her assistance, vision, and leadership in implementing the academy model, Hillwood's graduation rates have increased, discipline rates have decreased, and test scores have improved. Equally important, academy students now have the opportunity to participate in numerous experiential learning experiences and interact with a number of highly engaged business partner. Hughes is in the process of facilitating the renovation of Hillwood's health science labs, a project made possible by a $100,000 grant from one of her partners, the HCA Foundation.
