Murphy named Counselor of the Year

On May 12, 2014, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual Academy Awards. Teachers, principals, business partners, and community interest groups came together to celebrate the achievements of the 2013-2014 school year and recognize those schools that have made outstanding gains.  photoSusan Murphy is a counselor in the Academy of Business and Consumer Services at Maplewood High school and believes all students have the ability to achieve their future goals. Whether that goal includes going to college or into a career. Whether that goal includes going to college or into a career, she has worked with the academy partners to conduct mock interviews with her students to increase professionalism and real-world experience. The students, in turn, have used this hands-on knowledge to teach the same skills to both Maplewood freshmen and to Gra-Mar seventh graders. Murphy helped increase the number of her students applying to college from 57 percent to 82 percent. Maplewood's scholarship awards increased from $91,000 in 2011 to $1.4 million in 2012, and then to $2.2 million in 2013. The quality collaborations between Murphy and the academy partners ensure students an opportunity to actively pursue their dreams by obtaining the required skills.
